| Located
near the intersection of Glendale and Sunset Boulevards, Echo
Park was often used as a shooting location for silent movies.
The reservoir was created in 1868 when a twenty-foot dam was constructed
at the mouth of the canyon in which the park lies. The pond caught
fire and burned for days in 1907 due to pollution from wildcat
oil rigs. Edward Doheny had discovered oil in 1892 at the corner
of 2nd Street and Glendale Boulevard, thereby triggering a Los
Angeles oil boom that would last for more than thirty years. |
